Ingredients

Scale

For the Chili Base:

  • 1½ lb ground beef

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce

  • 1 tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 tbsp chili powder

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Casserole:

  • 8 hot dogs

  • 8 hot dog buns (slightly stale works best)

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • 1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing buns)

Optional Toppings:

  • Sliced green onions

  • Pickled jalapeños

  • Crushed tortilla chips

  • Extra shredded cheese

Instructions

  • Make the Chili Base:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned (6–8 minutes). Add onion and garlic; cook 2–3 more minutes. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10–15 minutes. Set aside.

  • Prepare Buns and Hot Dogs:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the insides of the buns with melted butter and arrange in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Place a hot dog in each bun.

  • Assemble the Casserole:
Spoon chili over and around the hot dogs and buns. Top evenly with shredded cheddar cheese.

  • Bake:
Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, until cheese is bubbly and buns are golden around the edges.

  • Garnish and Serve:
Let cool for 5 minutes. Top with green onions, jalapeños, or chips if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
